Some of the Milestones we have achieved:

• First in vitro conception and birth (29 April 1984) for Africa. Shortly afterwards, the Unit reported the first test tube twins. Since then more than 1000 babies have been born due to IVF/GIFT treatment.
• World Health Organisation accepted the 'Tygerberg Strict Criteria' for the evaluation of sperm morphology (1986).
• First frozen embryo conception (1989) for South Africa.
• First ICSI conception and birth (12 October 1995) for South Africa.
• Development of a computerised system able to evaluate sperm morphology according the 'Tygerberg Strict Criteria' (1999).
• First pregnancy after laser treatment of the embryo (2006).
• The Unit uses endoscopic and laser procedures for infertility and gynaecological conditions.
